As many of you are aware, Ash Wednesday falls on February 14th this year, the day we also celebrate St. Valentine's Day. This coincidence, as you can imagine, creates a conundrum for our Catholic community. St. Valentines Day is a happy, festive occasion where sweets and treats are an integral part of the day. On the other hand, Ash Wednesday, which begins the penitential season of Lent, is a day of fasting. On Ash Wednesday, we receive ashes on our forehead as a reminder of our need for God's mercy and repentance. Unfortunately, these two events clash. The theme of the two events contradict each other.
Given this conflict, we have decided that, as a Catholic community, we will shift the celebration of St. Valentine's Day to the day before, better known as Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras. Like St. Valentine's Day, Shrove Tuesday is also a festive occasion. It is a day which centers around the consumption of rich foods and a spirit of celebration, and so St. Valentine's Day integrates very well with the Mardi Gras theme. By shifting any school based celebrations of St. Valentine's Day by one day, we are then able to retain the solemn, reverential nature of Ash Wednesday on February 14th. As we are a Catholic School and Ash Wednesday is a major feast in the liturgical life of the Church, we believe it should be given precedence on February 14th. We trust that the students and families of OLMC School will understand and fully support this decision to shift St. Valentine's Day festivities to Tuesday, February 13th.
May your St. Valentine's Day be filled with love with those who mean the most to you and may your Ash Wednesday be an experience of God's merciful love for you!
